Re-blocking informal settlement
Engagement
Re-blocking at its core is predicated on organized urban poor communities being at the forefront of and active agents of development. This strategy advocates that through including and not removing the urban poor informal communities can redesign informal settlement layouts, incrementally upgrade their informal housing (shacks/ shanty towns/favelas/slums) and infrastructural conditions, challenge spatial divisions, leverage state resources and still remain part of the city.
outcome
The process start of by sqauting for informal settlement that’s manageable due to the scale of people in need is too high, and we are constrained by funds as well. We identify the leadership structure of the settlement and present the idea to them. Thereafter the we held meetings with the community at large to share and get their views and opinions. Suitable prototypes had to meet the following criteria; they had to be fire and flood retardant, durable, flexible in design for future expansion and adaptation, quick to build, easy to transport, socially acceptable and affordable.
