Location: Samora Machel Settlement, Philippi, Cape Town - May 2015
Project Type: Creche Upgrading
Project Description: Prior to our engagement at Lusanda, the creche was in a very small structure that was leaking and unsafe. The harsh rains of Cape Town’s winters caused frequently flooding in the space. In collaboration with Catholic Welfare and Development, Ikhayalami built a completely new structure for Lusanda, one built up on a raised concrete foundation that will prevent flooding in the future. Ikhayalami’s build team created three new rooms for the creche: one big room for the children, a kitchen, and a room for the owner to stay in. These children are no longer forced to stay in a dilapidated, unsafe learning environment, but are now in a healthy, secure, and safe creche.
- Goals:
- Partner with CWD to improve a creche in Samora Machel Informal Settlement
- Provide a place of safety, health, and learning for the vulnerable and disadvantaged children at Lusanda
- Continue our project of upgrading as many creches in informal settlements in Cape Town as possible
- Impact:
- Created a place of safety for vulnerable children in Samora Machel Informal Settlement
- Enhanced and improved the standard of health for all the children attending the creche
- Project Collaborators: Catholic Welfare and Development
