Location: Samora Machel Settlement, Philippi, Cape Town - Month 2015
Project Type: Creche Upgrading
Project Description: Masikhule creche suffered from the problems that unfortunately plague many of the structures in South Africa’s informal settlements: poorly built, poorly insulated, and subject to frequent problems with flooding. Together with support from Catholic Welfare and Development, Ikhayalami broke down the metal structure and rebuilt the creche using brick blocks built up on a slab foundation that will prevent future flooding issues. Within the newly upgraded structure, there were rooms for both a classroom and a kitchen. These rooms were tiled, painted, and a partition was installed in the classroom to help divide babies and young children. There were also no toilets previously at Masikhule. However, Ikhayalami not only installed toilets, but also added windows, new locks, and painted the restroom area.
